Writing skills came inherently for me. So, I didn’t have to learn how to be a good writer, once I picked up my pen and journal—magic just happened. 

This made me believe that skills, intelligence and abilities were inherent. And if you weren’t born with it, you might spend eternity trying to learn it. 

However, this mindset handicapped my personal growth for years. It kept me from learning new things, or upgrading my writing skills. 

This thought pattern is called fixed mindset. It’s the main culprit in static self improvement which keeps you trapped with the fear of failure. 

To combat this, a growth mindset is what you need. It empowers you to reach your full potential and stand out from the crowd of mediocre. 

Perhaps you’re wondering how to get started, keep reading. I’ll share with you practical ways that helped me build a growth mindset and how you can implement them.

What is a Growth Mindset?

A growth mindset is the thought pattern that sees possibilities in every difficulty and embraces failure as a learning opportunity.

It’s also a superior belief system that abilities, intelligence, skills and talent can be developed irrespective of one’s background, personality or IQ.

Those with a growth mindset are convinced beyond all doubt that greatness and success are replicable through hard work, learning and persistence. 

According to Carol Dweck, a leading researcher on motivation and mindsets, only 40% of people have a growth mindset.

Hence, don’t feel guilty if you find yourself giving in to the slightest disappointments, you’re not alone. 

Why Do You Need a Growth Mindset?

A growth mindset is the foundation for long term success and continuous progress. It’s the fuel which enables you to push through obstacles and reach your goals.

With a growth mindset: 

  • You become more resilient in the face of failure: A growth mindset helps you see failure as a stepping stone, not a dead end. Instead of giving up, you look for what went wrong and how you can do better next time.
  • You embrace challenges instead of avoiding them: With a fixed mindset, challenges feel threatening. But a growth mindset encourages you to see difficult tasks as opportunities to stretch your skills and grow stronger.
  • You stay motivated to learn and improve: When you believe you can grow, you’re more likely to stay curious and engaged. This leads to consistent learning and better performance over time.
  • You develop a healthier relationship with feedback: Constructive criticism doesn’t sting as much when you’re focused on growth. You see feedback as helpful guidance, not as a personal attack.

Oftentimes, a growth mindset is the missing link between us and our desired success.

Change begins when you realize you need one. For me, I had to carry out a litmus test to know what traits were evident in me; a fixed mindset vs growth mindset traits

Of course, the former was dominant. Right there, I knew there was a problem and I needed solutions before things got overboard.  

Besides, If you’re reading this, it means you’ve realized you need an upgrade in your mindset.

2. Embrace Challenges Instead of Avoiding Them

The human instinct is programmed to choose the path of least opposition. This way, you get through life safe and comfortable. 

The truth? You’ll never make it to the other side (success) with such a mindset because sooner or later you’ll quit as challenges are inevitable.

For me: I began to embrace challenges by enrolling for a writing contest I had turned down for years. While I didn’t emerge as the winner, my life never remained the same. 

I met other writers whose works have served as inspiration through the years and sharpened my skills—although I won on my third time of participating.  

For you: Begin by going for that thing you’ve avoided all these years. It could be learning a new skill, starting a new project, or improving your personal finances

It isn’t all about winning at first, but learning to overcome your fear, and using failure as a growth process. 

3. Develop Persistence

It’s okay to feel discouraged when your efforts aren’t producing expected results. But, it isn’t okay to remain in that position for long. 

I have felt like giving up countless times on my journey of self improvement. But, If I quit, my goals will never become a reality. 

What I do: I remind myself of the reasons why I started this process at first, and I visualize the end results. Often, I seek inspiration by reading about those who have attained the progress I desire.

What you should do: Create a flow chart of your target goals and place it at points where you can easily have a glance. Also, you can derive motivation when you write your vision statement and read it mediatively when the going gets tough. 

In addition, learn to overcome negative mindset to get back on track quicker.

4. Learn From Criticism and Feedback

Just when you feel you’re good at what you’re doing, comes feedback that makes you feel like a failure. 

Criticism can make you doubt your abilities and give up on building yourself. 

However, you must realize that feedback is a valuable tool for improvement. They serve as guidance to your desired result. 

While some feedback might sound like a personal attack and uncalled-for, you need to focus on extracting constructive insights from every criticism.

What next?

You don’t go to bed with these insights or host a pity party. Instead, you apply it to that area that needs improvement and watch things change positively.

5. ​Set Incremental and Achievable Goals​

You become overwhelmed when you try to achieve big goals all at once. You’ll likely drown in stress and discouragement as a result of the pressure.

Instead, break down larger objectives into manageable steps. This makes it easy to attain progress faster which fosters a growth mindset. 

Hence, stay patient with yourself, growth is a process not a destination; life is in stages, so are your goals. 

To get started, create SMART oriented goals;

  • Specific: Read a book on self improvement.
  • Measurable: Read 25 pages a day or one chapter depending on the book length.
  • Relevant: At the end of the book, my self growth should shift from avoiding challenges to embracing it.
  • Time-bound: Finish reading this book in one week.

Also, don’t hesitate to celebrate your small wins as it encourages you to take a step higher.

6. Surround Yourself With Growth-Minded People

A growth mindset is contagious. If you keep company with those who see opportunities in every failure, you’ll contact this perspective in no time. 

When I began to take my growth in life seriously, my circle of friends began to change. Gradually, I started hanging out with people who shared my thought pattern and supported my journey of self-improvement.

However, this could be hard; cutting off friends you’ve known for decades. But, if they don’t motivate you to succeed and keep encouraging you to remain in your comfort zone—you need to rethink. 

7. Invest in Continuous Learning

Building a growth mindset isn’t a one day transformation process, instead a continuous process. 

Every day, new and upgraded ideas, strategies, and projects are launched. This means, the ideology you once believed will go outdated and ineffective.

Hence, the more you learn, you expose yourself to new possibilities and stretch your knowledge, skills and abilities. 

Since you’re still breathing, never stop learning; explore new hobbies, take online courses, read books and enroll in skill development classes.

How to Get Started

Now that you’ve realized you need a growth mindset, begin by stepping out of your comfort zone to do the things you’ve shy away from. Also, keep your gaze on your end results and refuse to give up. 

In addition, to speed up this process, break your goals into manageable chunks and apply constructive insights where possible. 

The shift might seem small at first, but it creates a ripple effect that can transform how you learn, grow, and succeed.
