Obeying God’s instructions is one way God leads us into the person He created us to become. 

God often works with His children one step at a time. He does not rush the process, and He does not always reveal everything at once.

Sometimes, God gives you an instruction for today without telling you what tomorrow will look like.

This is where obeying God’s instructions becomes important.

When God gives an instruction, and we obey it, we position ourselves for the next step. But when we deliberately ignore what He has told us to do, we may delay our progress and make the journey more difficult than it needs to be.

The truth is, we may not always understand God’s instructions, but we can always trust the One giving them.

Why Obeying God’s Instructions is Key to Destiny Fulfillment 

Our trust and confidence in God are strengthened when we walk in obedience.

You may trust God deeply for a particular result, but if you refuse to follow His direction, you may struggle to arrive at the destination He has prepared for you.

Think about driving to a place you have never visited before. You may trust the person giving you directions, but if you constantly ignore the instructions and choose your own route, you cannot blame the person when you get lost.

The same applies to our walk with God.

Obeying God’s instructions requires us to trust that He sees what we cannot see.

God knows the beginning and the end. He knows where a particular decision will lead, the people we will meet along the way, the opportunities ahead, and even the dangers we cannot see.

So when God says, “Stay,” it may be because He wants to accomplish something where you are.

When He says, “Go,” it may be because your next assignment is somewhere else.

Our responsibility is not always to understand everything before we obey. 

Sometimes, our responsibility is simply to obey.

Disobedience Can Take You Away From God’s Plan

Every act of disobedience has consequences.

Disobedience to God is sin, and we see its devastating consequences from the beginning of human history. Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s instruction, and sin entered the world.

Thankfully, Christ came to reconcile humanity back to God.

However, the lesson remains relevant. 

When we repeatedly reject God’s instructions, we can move away from His intended path for our lives and create unnecessary struggles for ourselves.

God’s plan does not change because we refuse to obey, but our experience of the journey can become much more difficult.

This is why obedience to God should never be treated as something optional.

When You Think You Know Better Than God

One of the reasons people struggle with obeying God’s instructions is that they believe they know what is best for themselves.

We often think we know what we want, where we should be, and how quickly things should happen.

But we know only a small part of the story.

God is our Creator. He understands us better than we understand ourselves.

Imagine someone who has been working in the same office for years. They have prayed for a change, but nothing seems to be happening. Eventually, they become frustrated and decide to leave because they believe God is not doing anything.

But:

• What if God told them to remain there for a particular purpose?

• What if there is a person they are meant to influence?

• What if there is something they are meant to learn?

• What if the next opportunity is connected to the assignment they are currently complaining about?

We may never know.

This is why we should be careful about making decisions simply because we are tired of waiting.

Stay Where God Has Assigned You

You are most effective when you function in the place God has assigned you.

Sometimes, the place you are currently in may not look impressive. It may not provide everything you desire. It may even feel like nothing is happening.

But if God has instructed you to remain there, do not assume that He has forgotten you.

Walking in obedience means remaining where God has placed you until He gives you another instruction.

This does not mean staying in every situation regardless of circumstances. It means seeking God before making major decisions and being willing to follow His direction rather than allowing frustration to decide for you.

One Act of Disobedience Can Affect the Next Instruction

There are times when we become frustrated because we want God to reveal the next step, yet we have not obeyed the last instruction He gave us.

We want a new direction while ignoring the old one.

We want God to reveal the next chapter while refusing to finish the current page.

Sometimes, the instructions may seem small:

• Forgive someone.

• Leave a particular habit.

• Start something.

• Stop something.

• Apologize.

• Give.

• Serve.

• Wait.

• Pray.

• Move.

Whatever the instruction may be, do not underestimate the importance of small acts of obedience.

Obeying God’s instructions is not always about doing something dramatic. Sometimes, it is simply doing what God has already told you to do.

The Benefits of Obeying God’s Instructions

The benefits of obedience to God are numerous.

When we walk in obedience, we position ourselves to experience His guidance, grace, protection, and favor according to His will.

Obedience also gives us clarity.

When we follow God’s direction, we do not have to spend our lives constantly wondering which path to take. We learn to depend on Him for direction instead of relying completely on our own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

What a powerful promise.

God does not ask us to figure out everything by ourselves. He asks us to trust Him and acknowledge Him in our decisions.

Obedience Helps You Walk in Purpose

The journey of life can be complicated.

There are distractions, temptations, wrong relationships, opportunities that look attractive but are not right for us, and decisions that can take us far away from God’s purpose.

Trying to figure everything out by ourselves can lead to years of unnecessary struggle.

But obeying God’s instructions gives us direction.

This does not mean that obedience makes life completely free of challenges. Rather, it means that we are not navigating life’s challenges without God’s direction.

Those who consistently submit to God learn to recognize His leading and become more sensitive to His voice.

Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice

One of the clearest lessons about obedience is found in the story of King Saul.

Samuel said:

“Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” — 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)

This is a powerful warning.

Sometimes, we try to compensate for disobedience by doing other things for God:

• We may give money.

• We may help people.

• We may serve in church.

• We may sow seeds.

• We may perform religious activities.

These things can be good, but they cannot replace obedience.

God is not looking for our activities while we deliberately ignore His instructions.

Obeying God’s instructions must come before trying to use religious activities to cover up our disobedience.

Obey God’s Written Instructions

Obeying God’s instructions is not only about personal instructions we believe God gives us. It also includes the instructions already written in Scripture.

God has given us principles for how to live, love, forgive, serve, speak, give, work, and relate with others.

We do not need to wait for a special revelation before obeying what God has already made clear in His Word.

For example, Scripture instructs us to meditate on God’s Word.

Joshua 1:8 says:

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein…” — Joshua 1:8 (KJV)

God’s Word is not simply meant to be read. We are expected to observe and do what it teaches.

There are benefits attached to obedience, but there are also consequences when we deliberately refuse to follow God’s instructions.

Obedience Brings Peace

One of the ways we can examine our walk with God is by paying attention to our peace.

When we knowingly move against God’s direction, our hearts may become troubled.

This does not mean that every uncomfortable feeling is a sign that we have disobeyed God. Sometimes, obedience itself can be uncomfortable.

But when you know that God has instructed you to do something and you deliberately choose the opposite, it is worth stopping and examining your heart.

Ask yourself:

“Lord, have I moved outside Your instructions?”

• Be humble enough to listen.

• Be willing to correct your steps.

• Be willing to obey.

You Do Not Have to Understand Everything Before You Obey

Abraham is one of the greatest examples of faith and obedience in Scripture.

God instructed him to leave his country and his father’s house and go to a place God would show him.

“So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him…” — Genesis 12:4 (KJV)

Notice the simplicity of his response; God spoke and Abraham obeyed.

He did not have the complete map before he started moving.

This is often how God works with us.

He may show you the next step without showing you the entire journey.

Your responsibility is to obey the step He has revealed.

A Prayer for Grace to Obey God

If you have struggled with following God’s instructions, you can pray:

“Father, help me to trust You enough to obey You even when I do not understand. Search my heart and reveal every area where I have ignored Your instructions. Give me the grace to correct my ways and follow Your direction. Help me not to allow fear, impatience, pressure, or my own understanding to lead me away from Your plan. Teach me to recognize Your voice and give me the courage to obey. May my life remain aligned with Your purpose for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement on Obeying God’s Instructions

Following God is a journey of one step at a time:

• You may not know what the next five years will look like. 

• You may not understand why God has asked you to remain in a particular place.

• You may not understand why He has told you to wait, forgive, serve, start, stop, or move.

But you do not need to understand everything before you obey. You need to trust the One who knows everything.

Obeying God’s instructions does not imprison you. It guides you through the maze of life.
